Free Online File Converters? You might be getting more than you bargained for

Free Online File Converters

We’ve probably all done it—searched for a free online file converter when trying to quickly turn a Word doc into a PDF or convert a video for uploading. But a recent warning from Malwarebytes has put a spotlight on the hidden dangers behind some of these too-good-to-be-true tools.

“Some of the top-ranking websites that claim to offer free file conversions—like from .docx to .pdf, or .png to .jpg—are actually distributing adware and malware,”
says Pieter Arntz, the author of the Malwarebytes blog post.

While these sites often do perform the promised file conversion, they also run malicious scripts in the background—silently infecting your computer with unwanted programs, tracking tools, or worse.

“A wolf in sheep’s clothing”

Many of these malicious file converter sites rank high in search engine results, which can easily lure in unsuspecting users. Malwarebytes discovered that several popular domains serve as a front for a sophisticated malware distribution operation. Once you upload your file, the site might redirect you to a fake download page, or bundle malware into the file you’re downloading.

“This isn’t just an annoying pop-up or some shady ads. It’s actual malware that can compromise your privacy and system security,”  Malwarebytes warns.

How to Spot a Suspicious File Converter

Malwarebytes recommends users steer clear of unknown or poorly reviewed sites and to be cautious even if the site looks professional. Some red flags include:

  • Excessive ads or pop-ups
  • Being redirected through multiple domains
  • Unexpected software download prompts
  • A push to allow browser notifications

Better yet, stick to trusted software or browser extensions from reputable developers—and if you’re not sure, a quick check on websites like VirusTotal can often flag any known threats.

In an age where convenience often overrides caution, this latest warning is a stark reminder: if it’s free and fast, you might be the product.

As Malwarebytes concludes:

“Always think twice before uploading personal or sensitive documents to an unknown website. You might be doing more than converting a file—you could be opening the door to your system.”
